Transcript: Buy a Portable Video Player

There are many choices now when it comes to watching movies or TV on the move. The latest options are the super small, multi-dimensional portable video players. These players can play music and video, plus display your digital photos. Some can even record video like Tivo from a TV or VCR.

Portable Video Player Choices

Three of the most popular are: Playstation Portable or PSP, the video iPod and the Archos Portable Media Center.

Sony PSP Portable Video Player

Let's start with Sony's PSP. It has one of the best screens of the bunch, offering bright, vibrant color and a sharp picture. It's also the first handheld gaming device that supports wi-fi. The wireless connection is usable for multiplayer games and it will also allow you to access Live TV. With the PSP you can watch films on the Universal Media Disc format designed specifically for the portable. They are small discs sold at stores for about the same cost as a DVD, up to 30 bucks. There are hundreds of movies to choose from as well as popular TV shows like Seinfeld. The PSP costs around 250 dollars. The biggest downside to the PSP is the limited storage space. Unlike the iPod and the Archos, the Playstation Portable does not have a built-in hard drive. So all the saved game info, digital music, photos and videos go on a memory stick media card. Those cards are no bigger than 2 Gigabytes right now, about enough space for a couple of feature length films.

iPod Portable Video Player

Let's move on now to the slender and sleek video iPod. The overall size is much smaller than the Playstation Portable. It's so tiny you can slip it into your pocket. But, that also means your screen isn't as big and bold. The iPod has an enormous amount of storage, up to 60 gigabytes or about 150 hours of video content. It also plays music and can be used to show off your photos. Another distinguishing feature of the iPod is its tight integration with iTunes and the iTunes Music Store. That way you don't have to monkey around with other software to get video onto your iPod. You can buy your favorite TV shows and music videos just like you do with the music. The iPod also has a leg up when it comes to accessories. There are literally hundreds of chargers, docks, adapters and other products designed specifically for the iPod. One downside to the iPod, though, is its battery life. It will only give you around two hours for video playback. That won't even cover some people's daily commute let alone a flight.

Archos Portable Video Player

The last portable video player we want to highlight is the Archos Portable Media Center or what I like to call TIVO to go. It can record video from a TV, VCR, and cable system and even from DVD. It's compact, has a wireless remote and a removable battery. It can store hours of video. And, unlike the other two systems, it also offers an excellent battery life. You can watch at least two full-length feature films and even squeak in your favorite sitcom. But, there are a couple of negatives. Getting video into the unit remains tricky since most files must be converted before you can view them. And the Archos is pretty pricey at up to a thousand bucks.

If you're looking for an all-in-one device, one that will allow you to watch movies, TV or listen to music on the go, especially if you travel a great deal, Portable Video Players might just be perfect for you.
