Transcript: How to Clean a Laptop Keyboard

Zack Heene here for About.com. Today, I will so you the right way to clean a laptop keyboard without damaging it.

Cleaning Supplies

The items you will need are: a dust-free cloth, cleaner (water with a drop or two of liquid detergent) and a can of compressed air.

Open Laptop and Turn It Upside Down

The first think to know is that you don’t clean it like a desktop keyboard there are few different methods. Go ahead and open up the laptop, and turn it upside down. You don’t want to tap or hit the laptop to shake out the dust and dirt. Instead take your fingers, push in to the keys and lightly slide up and down the keyboard like this. Do this several times but don’t push too hard or you could damage or break the keys. This will allow some of the dirt, dust and hair to fall out.

Spray Compressed Air

Set the laptop on a desk or a flat surface. Now get the compressed air can, and hold it at a 45 degree angle, slowly pull the trigger and move between the keys like this. This forces the dust, lint and particles to blow out. Make sure you blow between all the keys.

Wipe Down Keys

Now put a very small amount of cleaner on the cloth to make it just a little damp, not wet at all. A wet cloth could ruin the laptop. Carefully wipe down all the keys, the mouse pad and area around the keyboard. Most manufacturers don’t recommend using alcohol or other harsh solvents, since it can remove or damage the letters on top of the keys and ruin the laptop all together.

Let Keyboard Dry

When you are done, leave the laptop open so the screen is in the up position. Leave it open like this over night just in case there is any moisture under the keys, this will allow it to air out and evaporate.

By morning you are ready to grab your clean laptop and head to work.
