It's not only more convenient to use a cell phone hands free - look ma, no hands - it may be required while you're driving a car. In fact, in several states now, using headsets while behind the wheel is mandatory by law to help keep you and your family safe.

If you're looking for a hands free option, there are plenty out there.

First, let's talk about some of the different styles.
 

Ear Bud Headsets

The smallest and sleekest, resembling something from Star Trek, is the ear bud headset. These guys are so stealthy, you should be prepared for some funny looks. People may think you're talking to yourself. Some models are just one small piece that fits snugly in your ear canal, while others wrap around the ear. The ear buds are available in wireless. Boom Headsets

The ear buds are comfortable and effective, but if you're worried about being heard, you may prefer a boom headset. These sets have a physical microphone positioned near the mouth so people can hear you a bit better.
 

Retractable Headsets

The last style is the retractable headset. It stores the wire in a small case, preventing a tangled mess and allowing you to adjust the length of the wires during your conversation.

Hands Free in your Car

Once you've decided on a headset style, there are some other useful features to consider. If you catch up on most of your calls in the car, you may prefer an installed device. These are usually professionally installed behind the dashboard of your car. The wires are typically hidden from view. The installed car-kits are easy to use and provide good voice and listening quality. They're ideal for people who spend a lot of time in the car and don't want the hassle of cables. But, the installed car-kits tend to be a more expensive option.

Portable car-kits are a cheaper alternative to a fully installed kit. They plug into your car's cigarette lighter or power outlet. They aren't as sophisticated as the installed devices, but if you get new wheels, you can bring the device with you. They also make sense for people who spend a great deal of time in rental cars. Some portable car-kits are also Bluetooth-enabled allowing them to connect to your phone without the need for a wire.

Bluetooth Headsets

Now onto wireless headsets. They are devices that use Bluetooth technology, allowing you to connect your headset to your cell, and as the name suggests, with no wires!! They provide most of the advantages of a wired headset without the cords, but they require a battery source or need to be kept charged. You must have a Bluetooth-enabled phone or a Bluetooth adapter for your phone in order to use a Bluetooth headset. These guys are ideal for people who want to use their cells hands-free all the time, not just in the car.

The bottom line is using a headset is a good idea, even if it's not required by law, to keep you and your family safe in the car. But, it's also convenient to be hands free wherever you are, at home, at work or on the go.
