Talk about a situation which enabled you to realize you had a certain
strength or weakness at work that you didn't know about before and how you dealt
with this new finding.
I can’t think out a situation which is appropriate for this condition at once, but a memory popped into my mind when I saw this topic. So let me share this experience now.
In 2010, I worked at IBM and was in charge of mainframe selling which is a kind of very very big computer. I was crazy to call customer and present the product as long as the customers give me a chance, but I would rather leverage our technical to make presentation than me because I was a salesman and didn’t know the technical detail about the product.
During that time, I had asked a lot of colleagues’ help, some colleagues are IBM account salesmen and can provide business opportunities. One day, one of my colleagues told me he made an appointment with Shanghai Police bureau and invited me to introduce the product, it was so close to the time when we would call the client. I was not self-confident to make the introduction by myself, so I asked our technical team’s help. Finally an engineer was assigned to work with me, and then I specially talked with him about my ideas and notes what we should say more or less in front of the client in order to impress them at this time.
But unfortunately, in opposition to my expectation, the engineer made the presentation too technically and really did not understand what the client cared about, I was afraid I would be impolite if I had interrupted him when he was presenting, but facts proved that I was wrong. The client was very dissatisfied with this communication and my colleague who made this appointment went to his boss to complain about it. of course, my boss known the news quickly.
After that, I have begun to contemplate what was wrong with me. I was hardworking like crazy, but the result couldn’t approach to my plan. What if I had another opportunity, what should I do? I would have taken as presenter by myself, I would have chosen another engineer to work with me, I would have checked the presentation in advance, or I would have interrupted him immediately. Finally, I had found the radical problem was I needed to have a rest for consideration, I thought that crazy work was right while no time to think over my actions until it was happened, I did need some time to consider how to do and what to do instead of doing anytime.
